NARRATIVE TEXT


“Good morning, students. How are you today? Last meeting, we learned about Recount Text. Do you still remember? Yes, recount tells past experiences.

Now, today we will study another type of text. It is very interesting because it is full of stories, imagination, and lessons. The name of the text is Narrative Text.”

Definisi Narrative Text

“Narrative Text is a text that tells a story, either real or imaginary, to entertain the readers. Jadi, narrative adalah teks yang berisi cerita baik nyata maupun imajinasi dengan tujuan utama untuk menghibur, tetapi kadang juga menyampaikan pesan moral.”

Jenis-jenis Narrative Text

“There are many kinds of narrative texts, for example:”

  1. Fairy tales → dongeng (contoh: Cinderella, Snow White).

  2. Fables → cerita binatang (contoh: The Tortoise and the Hare).

  3. Legend/Myth → legenda atau mitos (contoh: Malin Kundang, Sangkuriang).

  4. Folktales → cerita rakyat (contoh: Timun Mas).

  5. Science fiction / fantasy → cerita imajinasi tentang masa depan atau dunia lain.

Ciri-ciri Narrative Text

“The characteristics of narrative text are:”

  • Menceritakan kisah atau dongeng.

  • Menggunakan Past Tense (karena menceritakan kejadian masa lampau).

  • Menggunakan banyak action verbs (run, go, say, fight, etc.).

  • Menggunakan direct speech untuk percakapan.
    Contoh: She said, “I am very happy.”

  • Ada konflik atau masalah yang dialami tokoh.

  • Biasanya diakhiri dengan pesan moral (moral value).

 Tata Bahasa (Grammar) dalam Narrative

  • Past Tense digunakan untuk menceritakan peristiwa.
    Contoh: went, saw, lived, played.

  • Time connectives digunakan untuk urutan cerita.
    Contoh: once upon a time, then, after that, suddenly, finally.

  • Adjectives digunakan untuk menggambarkan tokoh atau suasana.
    Contoh: beautiful princess, brave soldier, dark forest.

  • Adverbs untuk keterangan waktu dan tempat.
    Contoh: happily, sadly, quickly, in the castle, at the river.

 Fungsi Sosial Narrative Text

“The social function of narrative text is to amuse, entertain, and to teach moral value to the readers. Jadi, fungsi sosialnya adalah untuk menghibur pembaca sekaligus memberikan pelajaran hidup.”

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

  1. Orientation → memperkenalkan tokoh, waktu, dan tempat.

  2. Complication → masalah atau konflik muncul.

  3. Resolution → penyelesaian masalah (bisa berakhir bahagia atau sedih).

  4. Re-orientation (optional) → penutup atau kesimpulan cerita.

  5. Moral Value → pesan moral yang dapat dipetik dari cerita.

 Contoh Teks Narrative

 The Lion and the Mouse

Orientation:
Once upon a time, there was a lion in the jungle. He was sleeping under a tree.

Complication:
Suddenly, a little mouse ran over his body. The lion woke up and caught the mouse. The lion wanted to eat him. The mouse begged, “Please don’t eat me. Maybe one day I can help you.” The lion laughed but let the mouse go.

Resolution:
One day, the lion was caught in a hunter’s net. He roared loudly asking for help. The mouse heard it and came quickly. The mouse bit the net and freed the lion.

Re-orientation & Moral Value:
The lion was very grateful and said, “Thank you, little mouse. You are really my friend.”

Moral Value: Even small creatures can be very helpful.


“Alright students, today we have learned about Narrative Text: its definition, types, characteristics, grammar, social function, structure, and example.

For your assignment, please try to find one narrative text from Indonesian folktales, like Malin Kundang or Timun Mas. Write it in English and identify its orientation, complication, resolution, and moral value.”
