THE ROARING WAVE OF THE KAMPAR RIVER

Long ago, when Pelalawan was still wrapped in dense rainforest, the Kampar River flowed calmly like a mirror of the sky. The people lived in harmony with nature and believed the river was guarded by an ancient spirit named Datuk Ombak Kampar. He was rarely seen, yet his presence was always felt. “As long as humans respect the river, the river will protect their lives,” the village elders often whispered to the younger generation.

That peace began to fade when strange signs came from the sea. The tide rose higher than ever before, and a distant roar was heard from the estuary. From the depths of the ocean emerged a giant sea creature known as Talang Biru, a water dragon filled with anger. “Your river is calm while my sea suffers from human greed,” he growled. His rage was released, and powerful tidal currents were sent upstream against the flow of the Kampar River.

At last, Datuk Ombak Kampar revealed himself in the middle of the river, holding his ancient mangrove staff. “Talang Biru, this river is not your enemy,” he said firmly. His warning was ignored. Giant waves were pushed into the river, trees along the banks were shaken, and small boats were tossed violently. Fear was felt by the people, and prayers were offered in silence.

A great battle could not be avoided. The river water was stirred by unseen forces, the sky darkened, and thunderous sounds echoed through the land. Forest guardians were summoned to help protect the balance. With one final strike, the mangrove staff was planted deep into the riverbed, and a sacred oath was spoken. “Your waves shall be bound, so the land will not be destroyed,” declared Datuk Ombak Kampar. The oath was heard by nature itself.

Talang Biru was finally driven back into the sea. Yet the tidal force that had been unleashed was not completely erased. It transformed into a long, powerful wave that returned from time to time, racing against the river’s current. It no longer brought destruction, but awe. By the people of Pelalawan, this wave was named Bono.
